Wally Animated GIF livewallpaper for Android…

Category: cypher-sec.org

I’m a web coder and a graphic designer, with no real time to devote to *droid coding of any sort, sadly.  :(

BUT, I love my live wallpapers or an animated wallpaper if you will.

One thing I’ve enjoyed on many of my past mobiles was that I could easily create an animated gif/wallpaper/background myself and just load it on my device (phone/mobile) and it worked… no real fuss.

Sadly, with livewallpapers on android (while I’m sure it’s easy for some) it’s not so easy for me to whip up an animated wallpaper and or easily swap it out as I make or come across them.

Enter: a (currently) free program called “Wally“.  Wally appears (from my guess) to be a LiveWallpaper “shell” for android.

Basically, it’s a livewallpaper (so it can be animated app wise) but is an empty shell waiting for an animated gif of your choosing.

This program has made it CRAZY easy for me to use whatever image I want on my device and have it displayed as animated, WITHOUT having to learn to code an application/program for the or many devices.

It was painless to install and equally painless to use.

Install it (of course): you can grab it from appbrain here

or you can scan this QR:  Wally QR AppBrain link

Once you’ve installed, it select “livewallpaper” from your device and choose “Wally”:

Then it’s a matter of selecting the Animated GIF you want from your image library and whether you want it to “fill” or “stretch”.  I found that “fill” is like “tile” on a computer, it will do just that and does not look so great (to me)… BUT, if (for the HTC EVO) you set your animated image to be the size of your screen (in my case 278×480) then the “stretch” option puts it smack center in the screen (with actually no stretch ’cause of the creation size) and it’s perfect!  :D

Clearly you’ll want to find out what size your screen is for a perfect fit, but once you know that, then it’s just a matter of sticking the images on your device and loading ’till your hearts content.  :D

Over all, I’ve not found any problems with its functionality on my EVO.  No speed degradation, it acts just like a livewallpaper app-lication.  Which goes to say, I expect it to drain the battery just as much as a regular livewallpaper might (less any audio or interactivity drain, ’cause it’s just an animated wallpaper).

Of course I just took a non animated screen shot

but you can see the animated version above!
